Independent experts.
Uncommon depth.
No agenda but yours.

Abbotsford & Provost are independent consultants with over 35 years of experience delivering technology-driven change in Australian and New Zealand higher education.

We have no preferred vendors, no implementation revenue and no interest other than your institution's success. Our independence is the foundation of the trust our clients place in us.

What we stand for

Four commitments to every client

These are not aspirations. They are the standards we hold ourselves to in every engagement.

Independence — always

We have no preferred vendors, no implementation partnerships and no revenue that depends on which system you choose. Our recommendations are grounded in your institutional context and your interests alone. When we say vendor-agnostic, we mean it completely.

Honesty over comfort

We will tell you if your data is not ready for what you want to do with it. We will tell you if your business case has gaps that will fail at governance. We will tell you if the system you are considering is not the right fit. Honest advice, even when it is uncomfortable, is what clients pay us for.

Evidence, not opinion

Every recommendation we make is grounded in analysis — of your current environment, your data, the market and your institution's strategic context. We do not arrive with pre-formed conclusions. We arrive with frameworks, ask the right questions, and let the evidence determine the answer.

Outcomes, not outputs

A business case that sits in a drawer is not a success. A system that goes live but does not improve the timetable is not a success. We measure ourselves by whether our clients achieve the outcomes they set out to achieve — and we design our engagements accordingly.

Partnership, not prescription

We work alongside institutional teams, not above them. We transfer knowledge, build capability and leave clients better equipped to navigate future challenges — not dependent on ongoing external support for problems they should be able to solve themselves.

Speed with rigour

Institutions cannot always wait for the perfect engagement. We have delivered rigorous business cases and sector-ready procurement processes in as little as twelve weeks. Speed and quality are not opposites — with the right experience and preparation, you can have both.

How we work

Our approach to every engagement

We start every engagement the same way: by understanding the institutional context before we offer any analysis or recommendation. The challenges facing a research-intensive university in New Zealand are not the same as those facing a multi-campus vocational institution in Victoria. Context determines everything.

We are deliberately small. We do not subcontract, we do not staff engagements with junior consultants, and we do not sell work we cannot personally deliver. When you engage Abbotsford & Provost, you get Matthew Sullivan and Gerard Verschuren — not their team.

We work with institutions at any stage of their transformation journey — from the first conversation about whether change is needed, through business case, procurement, implementation and into benefits realisation. We can enter and exit at any point.

Understand before advising

We invest time in understanding your institution's specific context, challenges and constraints before offering any analysis or recommendation.

Bring the sector perspective

More than 35 years of higher education experience means we know what other institutions have tried, what has worked, and what the market currently offers.

Make the complex clear

Our job is to make complex problems — and their solutions — clear enough for executives to fund and for teams to deliver. Clear Vision is not a tagline. It is a method.

Leave institutions stronger

We transfer knowledge, build internal capability and ensure that when the engagement ends, the institution is better equipped to manage its own technology and transformation agenda.

Maintain the highest standards

All business cases we have presented this century have won executive support and resources. That record reflects the standard we hold ourselves to — and the standard we bring to every new engagement.

The team

Two principals. Full attention.

When you engage Abbotsford & Provost, you work directly with Matthew Sullivan and Gerard Verschuren — not a junior consultant or an account manager. Every engagement receives the full benefit of our combined experience.

Matthew Sullivan

Principal Consultant

Business Cases Strategy Scheduling Target Architecture Executive Engagement

Matthew brings more than 35 years of experience in higher education technology and transformation. He has led engagements across the full spectrum of scheduling and resource management — from strategy and business cases through procurement, implementation and operational improvement.

His particular expertise is in building the case for change. All business cases Matthew has presented this century have won executive support and resources — a record that reflects both the rigour of his analytical approach and his understanding of how institutional decision-makers think and what they need to act with confidence.

Matthew has worked with universities across Australia and New Zealand, and is a recognised expert in the application of the Better Business Case methodology to higher education technology investment.

Gerard Verschuren

Principal Consultant

Implementation Process Transformation Procurement Student Administration Delivery Assurance

Gerard brings deep expertise in the delivery of complex technology and process transformation in higher education. His experience spans scheduling modernisation, student administration transformation, systems consolidation and operational improvement across a range of Australian universities.

Gerard's particular strength is in turning approved strategies and business cases into delivered outcomes — providing the project governance, quality assurance, change management and delivery discipline that the gap between a funded case and a successful go-live requires.

He has supported institutions through procurement processes, implementation programmes and operational improvement initiatives — always with a focus on building internal capability and leaving the institution stronger than he found it.
